Front Sight Finds Allies in Iowa College Presidents: Arm Campus Police

Front Sight Firearms Training Institute is America's largest gun training facility. Front Sight trains more students every year than all other shooting schools in the nation combined. For years, Front Sight, and Front Sight's founder and director, Dr. Ignatius Piazza, have been arguing the case for arming campus police, not only on college campuses but also public and private high schools. According to the Des Moines Register on September 12th, the presidents of Iowa's public universities have agreed with him and have each separately recommended to the Iowa Board of Regents that all Iowa campuses be protected by armed gunmen.

According to Regent Craig Lang, the presidents' letters are "interesting, but there are other things that will factor into the decision." He cites student opinions and national reports as such things. The idea that students would have any idea what to do with their own safety is something that Dr. Piazza and Front Sight find ridiculous. Unless the students are fully trained, responsible gun owners and users, there is no way that they would understand what would need to be done to keep them safe.

Craig's assertion that the presidents' letters are merely interesting reveals his true misunderstanding of the seriousness of the scenario at hand. As Dr. Piazza and Front Sight have been saying for years, to expect a number of men and women to guard and police a campus or school grounds without having full training or being armed is ridiculous. Not only is it ridiculous, they say, but it is also counter-intuitive: we assign them the responsibility of the protection of our students, and yet when it comes to actually being effective against a serious threat, we decide we won't assign them enough responsibility to protect our students.

Dr. Piazza and Front Sight want to know why we should even bother having guards or police on campus if they are effectively barred from doing anything productive when they're needed most. As such, Dr. Piazza created an opportunity for any and all schools across the nation to get their defenders fully trained. Dr. Ignatius Piazza opened up his arms to any three 'Safety Officials' from any school from all school districts in the nation. He is willing to offer defensive handgun training and concealed carry training to any three officials for free, just so that schools across the nation will be more secure.

It is his hope now that more schools will take him up on the offer, as the Iowa public colleges are far from the first schools to reconsider their stance on arming school police.
