Arbors Offer Perennial Appeal

Once you’ve decided to sell your house, you must take stock of all of its advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes, it can be painful, as you strive to view your home through the eyes of a prospective buyer, and force yourself to see the flaws that you have been overlooking for years. Of course, you can certainly be proud of the lawn that you maintain so meticulously, the garden that you cultivate so attentively, and the arbors overflowing with gorgeous flowers. But wait! What happens if you have to sell your home during the winter? Although the season has its fans, the scenery is not generally at its best. Actually, if you must sell your house during this time, you may have more luck showing it when everything is buried under a blanket of snow, as that would, at least, make it more scenic. Unfortunately, however, everything usually just looks bleak and dreary. Instead of being drawn in by curb appeal, prospective buyers are greeted with bare trees and a brown lawn, set off by gray skies. Because the days are shorter, and most people work from nine to five, you also have limited opportunities to show the house in the daylight. Although staging a home for sale is important at any time of the year, it’s even more crucial in the winter; and it requires a bit more creativity – and effort. The first thing that you should do to bring back some of that elusive appeal is to clear the sidewalk, driveway, walkways, and steps of snow and ice. Even though a few inches of snow might look pretty on the roof, the lawn, and the trees, you want to make your home look inviting, and snow-covered entryways make it look unfriendly, prohibitive, and even dangerous. If you can’t do the shoveling and salting yourself, it’s worth it to pay someone else to take care of it. Now, as long as there’s no problem getting into the house or driveway, you can play up the advantages of the season. For instance, if you live near a ski resort, or a park that has ice skating, cross-country skiing, tobogganing, or other winter activities, make sure that you mention it. Since it’s unlikely that you will be showing your home during the holidays, the Christmas lights will probably be down (in fact, they’d better be), but you can still display a winter wreath on your front door. In the evening, turn on the porch lights, and all other outside lights. A few strings of white lights wound around an arbor that prospective buyers will pass under will also put them in a glowing mood.
